Preparing for Virtual College Career Fairs

Make a great impression at the upcoming virtual career events.

Things look a little different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but J.B. Hunt recruiters still plan to attend this spring’s career fairs … virtually! J.B. Hunt recruiters plan to attend more than 100 virtual career events at universities in about 35 states across the country. Check out this list to find the event nearest you!

Virtual career events are different and might seem intimidating to some, but to help you prepare, Senior Manager of Recruiting, Meredith Carr, shares a few tips to help you get the most out of this year’s career fairs.

Step 1: Enroll in Your Event

“Have you researched the virtual events your university is hosting this spring? If not, don’t worry, you have time,” explains Meredith. “The best way to determine which events your university is hosting is to contact your career services department. They should have the materials they can share with you that’ll help prepare you for your one-on-one video conversations with employers.”

The career services department at your institution can help you sign up and provide the necessary materials and information you will need to attend the event. Since these are virtual, ensure that your computer or other device supports the application your university uses ahead of the event to avoid last-minute technical difficulties.

Step 2: Research the Companies Attending

“You can review, either through Handshake, Simplicity, or the platform your university uses, which employers are participating in the career fairs at your school,” Meredith shares.

Through the online platform your institution uses, you will be able to view the companies attending the event ahead of time. It is always a good idea to research the participating organizations and come ready with questions about the company or career opportunities that you can address during your conversations with employers.

“Once you determine which companies you would like to speak to, you can research which representatives they plan to have in attendance and proactively sign up to speak with them during the event.”

Step 3: Show Your Stuff

Ahead of the events, review your resume and come ready to share more about your previous experience. This helps our recruiters get to know you better and potentially match you with the best open position based on your desired career path and experience.

“Depending on the platform your school uses for career fairs, you could experience one-on-one conversations via video or chat. Either way, we recommend being prepared to speak to your academic and professional experience, as well as what interests you most about J.B. Hunt.”

Step 4: Dress for Success

When you look your best, you feel your best. Though you might attend these events from your couch this year, it is still important to come dressed in business attire, as you would an in-person career fair. This is a small way to make an impactful first impression with employers during your video or chat conversations.

“We are an organization that is passionate about recruiting the next generation of leaders,” says Meredith. “We look forward to engaging with you this spring.”
