Meet Michael! Michael is a warehouse lead at our Final Mile Services® warehouse in Wilmer, TX. Learn more about Michael’s career, and what it’s like working at J.B. Hunt in the warehouse.

Tell us a little bit about your career at J.B. Hunt.

“I’ve been with J.B. Hunt seven years. I came over from [another company]. They closed their transportation department, so I decided to leave and look for another job. I liked the opportunity here at J.B. Hunt. So, I put in an application, and it was accepted.”

So, you started as a Final Mile Services driver. What made you want to transition to your warehouse job?

“I came in as a Final Mile [Services] driver doing the installs, installing appliances, making home deliveries, retail deliveries and stuff. It was a great experience. I got to learn how to install appliances, something I have never done before. So, it was a learning experience that I enjoyed.”

“I do a lot of different things at J.B. Hunt now. I ventured over from the transportation side to the warehouse part. For me, it was for a more manageable schedule.”

What are some of your responsibilities in a warehouse job?

“I start at 4 a.m. and I make sure the trucks get loaded, all the product gets scanned out, and make sure everything gets put on the right trucks. I’m the warehouse lead, so I have a crew that’s under me. I make sure they’re doing the right thing, make sure we’re getting everything loaded, pulled to the right doors, and loaded on the right truck.”

What type of experience or training did you need for your job?

“I was a lead at my last job, transportation lead, but I also had warehouse duties. So, I had warehouse experience when I came over. I was already forklift certified, but I still had to go through J.B. Hunt’s forklift training class.”

What skills would you say are needed to succeed in a warehouse role?

“Some of the skills needed and that will be helpful for this job is to be very motivated, dedicated, hardworking, quick thinking, be a team player, and be willing to learn and try different and new stuff.”

What do you enjoy most about working in the warehouse?

The most rewarding part of my job is the flexibility. J.B. Hunt is very flexible. They work with you if you have certain things going on. They work with you, they care. It’s just like being part of a big family.”

“The best part about working for J.B. Hunt, again, is the flexibility, the pay, the family atmosphere, and the camaraderie with your [team]. It’s just the overall great atmosphere.”

Do you feel there are opportunities for career growth at J.B. Hunt?

“The opportunities at J.B. Hunt, there are a lot of opportunities to grow. You don’t have to stay in one particular position. I came in as a driver, and I ventured over into the warehouse. If you want to grow, if you want to do different things, the opportunity is there.”

“And that’s the great thing about it. I do not have to leave J.B. Hunt, leave this company, to go try something new or to advance. I can stay within the company because, like I said, there’s tremendous opportunities to go farther within the company. It just depends on you. If you want to go farther, you can go. If you are comfortable where you are, you can stay where you are. Again, it just depends on you.”

What would you say to someone considering a warehouse job with J.B. Hunt?

“The advice I would give someone thinking about being a warehouse employee, just give it a try. You never know if you don’t give it a try. Just come and be a part of a great team, great company. You’ll have many opportunities, and you can go as far as you want to go.” “When I first started here at J.B. Hunt, it was just a job. I just figured I’d be a driver here forever. But once I got here, and to see different guys that I came in with me advance, moving up the ladder, it became more than just a job. And I realized I had that same opportunity as well. So, it’s not just a job. You have plenty of opportunities to advance if you want to advance. And there’s opportunities there.”
